(Canberra).- Australia moves forward with gambling reforms as the Pre-commitment and Carded Play Bill 2024 gets parliamentary approval.

Australia Passes Gambling Legislation Amendment Bill 2024

The Gambling Legislation Amendment (Pre-commitment and Carded Play) Bill 2024 was debated and officially passed in Australia’s Parliament on May 27, 2025. This landmark legislation introduces stricter regulations aimed at enhancing responsible gambling measures across the country.

Victorian Government Postpones Carded Play Trial

Following the bill’s passage, the Victorian government announced that the trial for the mandatory pre-commitment system, known as ‘carded play’, is now postponed. Initially scheduled for May–June 2025, the trial’s timeline will be updated to align with the new legislative framework.

The additional time provided by the postponement will allow authorities to examine best practices nationwide and explore technology-neutral solutions to facilitate and refine the gambling regulation scheme.

Further Regulations and Consultation Underway

The Victorian government is set to develop ministerial directions and supporting regulations, ensuring that the industry and stakeholders have sufficient input in shaping the final implementation timeline before the trial officially begins.

With the bill now approved, Australian gaming regulators will work closely with industry leaders to ensure effective enforcement and smooth integration of the new pre-commitment policies, reinforcing the country’s commitment to responsible gaming practices.
